ReachdTV: Jerry West Interview Jake Bailey about Competitive Intelligence

In our Advanced workshop we have an entire module on Competitive Intelligence. Competitive Intelligence can mean a variety of things but for the purpose of our course we talk about spying on your competitor's SEO strategy as well as their pay per click strategy. Competitive Intelligence is one tool which webmasters often overlook but it is gem if you are trying to get ahead in the search engine rankings.

We sat in on a competitive intelligence discussion at PubCon 2007 in Vegas and had the chance to speak with Jerry West of SEO Revolutions and Andy Bailey about their competitive intelligence strategy. Jerry actually gave Rodney a break from interview and took over the mic to interview Jake Bailey. Thanks Jerry.

Jerry West: This is Jerry West with SEO Revolution and we are here in Las Vegas at Webmaster World and is got done with the competitive intelligent session and I look at him mostly as the CI guy and why don’t you tell a take story how we can use competitive intelligence to advantage? About two months ago a women called me up with the issue that her competitor was really hammering in a big time. All he did is went to Yahoo Site Explorer, looked at her competitors index pages and we found over 42,000 of her competitors invoices listed. All their customers name, addresses, phone numbers, what they bought and every thing. So choosing to take list for her boss and get her a very nice rate. Well, let me introduce yourself to person who I have learned all this from is Jake Baillie from STN lab, Jake.

Jake Baillie: Hi how is it going, thank you?

Jerry West: We just came from your CI session and you want people to use the damn internet. What is the one key component that you feel that most Webmasters fail when they do any type of searches online?

Jake Baillie: Well, I mean a lot of people won’t concentrate on their competitors website, but they won’t concentrate on their competitive companies, so an example I gave today was that, public report SEC filing of a very public company in the flower business from just their report online, you can actually extract their average cost per click, their conversion rate on their website and how much they spent online in PBC last year.

Jerry West: And all that is available, I would do is do some simple search?

Jake Baillie: Google search, search the damn internet.

Jerry West: So Jake going back in terms of your new company, STN labs you are going to doing lot of start-up seee money through important companies?

Jake Baillie: Yeah, we basically have an evolving business plan. We started up by funding pre-revenue start ups from anywhere to $50,000 to $500,000 and we now evolved into where we are investing in joint ventures with offline companies that have existing strong strong brands and helping to bring them online, but taking equity in the ventures themselves.

Jerry West: Nicely done, so if you have a good idea, emphasize good idea not one that sucks talk to Jack stnlabs.com. Listen to this guy, he is the god when it comes to competitive intelligence. Jake Baillie this has been Jerry West.
