Matt Cutts from Google Answers - "What's Next for Search Engines in 5 years"
I was reading through my RSS reader this morning just trying to get caught up after a week off and I came across this video of Matt Cutts. Matt is the head of webspam at Google and has a website where he talks about webmaster issues and Googly stuff.
Two questions from this video, that I thought were quite helpful.
1. What do you see from search engines in the next 5 years. - Matt's answer... Searchers are expecting more from search engines. Great point. More and more people are going to the search engines for answers and the searchers are expecting answers. If more people are going to the engines, it also stands to reason that they are also making their way to your site looking for answers. Do you know the questions that you visitors are asking? Is there any valuable content on your website.
2. Can a small webmaster compete with a larger webmaster? - Matt's Answer... Yes - by creating or targeting a niche. If you are just getting started with optimization, you should set you sights on a phrase that you can experience some success for quickly. Carve out your niche, gain some success and then target the broader terms.
