White Hat SEO and Black Hat SEO What's the Difference

I was just reading a post by Matt Cutts which mentions white hat and black hat SEO. If you are new to the search world and seo you may be new to the term white hat seo and black hat seo. Simply speaking white hat seo is basically following the guidlines laid out by the search eninges. Google has printed their Guidlines for webmasters at http://www.google.com/webmasters/guidelines.html. A white hat SEO is someone who follows the best practices and does not try and do things in a shady or underhanded manner.

I'm just like the next guy and would like to have short cuts and simpler ways of doing things but there is a difference between automation and being sneaky or shady.  Most black hat methods of cloaking, machine generated pages, or doorway pages are outdated as the search engines are smart and working hard to catch those cutting corners and delivering garbage on the web.

SEO Tip related to black hat and white hat SEO:

Do things in moderation. Once you have identified your keyword phrase, put in the appropriate places on your site but don't cram it in every little nook and cranny on the site.

If something seems shady or underhanded, it might be best to steer clear of that practice. You may sneak a shady practice by the search engines a time or two, but if you are caught you will get penalized and no one wants that.

Do your keyword research, follow the best practices, and write for the human reader. If you can do this, your site will stay out of trouble and you will see results online.
