Choosing Your Adwords Keywords

Search engine marketing starts with choosing the right keywords. If you get your keyword set wrong, you are spending your time barking up the wrong tree. We I say keywords, it is important to note that we are talking about the word or phrase that someone searches for on Google or Yahoo. We are not talking about your meta keywords or something on your website.

How should you try and discover what sort of Keywords are working the best?

Step 1. Go to this website and enter your root phrase https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

Why don't we try "wedding photograpy" as our root keyword... Here are some of the Keywords that we come up with.

1. professional wedding photography
2. digital wedding photography
3. wedding photography prices
4. wedding photography packages
5. wedding photographers
6. wedding photographer

Step 2. Look for Keywords that aren't related that you can use as negative keywords

Here are a few examples
1. eva longoria wedding photos
2. photo wedding invitations

I'm going to use the negative Keyword, -eva, -longoria, -invitiations

Why? Because I do not want my add to show when people search for those phrase. Using negative keywords can increase your click through rate and increase your quality score.

Step 3. Put these keywords into a focused ad group and let them run.

Step 4. Wait... Get some clicks, Get some conversions, Make some money!
Make some money... That's a nice bonus, when was the last time you did keyword research and actually got paid to do it!

Step 5. Select the best performing Keywords
Remember the best performing keywords are the ones that got the highest conversion rate. Not the ones with the most clicks or searches!

Step 6. Optimize your website for those Keywords.

There are some other steps that you could throw in there like spying on your competitors keywords, which is a good step to add but if you are in a small local niche then it is not a necessary step. If you'd like to hear a bit about how to spy on your competitors, please fire me off an email.
